في 6 آب/ أغسطس 1991 نشر الفيزيائي البريطاني تيم بيرنرز لي في سيرن في سويسرا أول موقع إلكتروني على الإطلاق WorldWideWeb (W3).

بحلول نهاية عام 1992 كان هناك عشرة مواقع على شبكة الإنترنت، وبعد أن أتاحت CERN تقنية W3 للجمهور على أساس خالٍ من حقوق الملكية في عام 1993، بدأت شبكة الإنترنت تدريجياً في التحول إلى العملاق الشامل الذي نراه اليوم.

بحلول عام 1994 كان هناك ما يقرب من 3 آلاف موقع وكان أحدها موقع Yahoo! الذي كان اسمه في الأصل 'Jerry and David's Guide to World Wide Web' والذي بدأ مشواره على الإنترنت كدليل ويب.

في 1995 أطلق أمازون وألتافيستا.

في عام 1997 ظهر ياندكس (الذي سيصبح العملاق الروسي المكافئ لجوجل) وكذلك نتفليكس، وفي عام 1998 ظهر جوجل وكان هناك أكثر من مليوني موقع.

في 1999 ظهرت شركة باي بال الذي تبعه طفرة هائلة في عدد المواقع بلغت أكثر من 400%، وفي عام 2000 أطلقت الصين عملاقها الخاص بايدو برفقة 17 مليون موقع آخر.

في 2001 ظهرت الموسوعة الحرة ويكيبيديا، ولم تشهد 2002 ولادة أي عملاق، بينما 2003 ولد لينكدإن الذي استحوذت عليه مايكروسوفت، وكذلك البرمجية مفتوحة المصدر ووردبرس التي يعمل عليها عدد هائل جدًا من المواقع اليوم.

أما 2004 كان العام الذي ولد فيه الموقع الذي سيغيّر وجه الإنترنت وهو فيسبوك بالإضافة إلى فليكر لينضما إلى 51 مليون موقع في الشبكة، تلاهما في 2005 يوتيوب وريدإت، وتأخر تويتر حتى 2006.

شهد 2008 مفهومًا جديدًا للتخزين السحابي عندما ظهر دروبوكس، وهي نفس السنة التي ظهرت فيها مدونة ملحوظة، وكان وقتها عدد المواقع في شبكة الإنترنت قد وصل إلى 177 مليون موقع.

في 2009 وصل عدد المواقع إلى 238 مليون موقع، أما في العام 2010 فقد انخفض عدد المواقع لأول مرة ليصل إلى 206 مليون موقع، كما شهد هذا العام ولادة عملاقين آخرين هما انستاغرام وبينتريست. ثمّ استقر شكل الإنترنت كما نعرفها الآن.

شهدت 2012 أعلى طفرة لعدد المواقع بعد استقرار شكل الإنترنت حيث تضاعف عدد المواقع تمامًا من 350 مليون حتى 700 مليون، وفي 2014 اقترب عدد المواقع من المليار لأول مرة، لكنه تراجع في 2015 للمرة الثالثة في تاريخ الإنترنت ووصل إلى 863 مليون موقع، ثمّ عاود العدد بالارتفاع ليصل في 2017 إلى الرقم القياسي وهو 1.76 مليار موقع، لكن عاد وانخفض في 2018 ليصل اليوم إلى 1.71 مليار موقع.
